Bailey Phoenix 640 Black Edition (2026): A Full Review
The Bailey Phoenix 640 has consistently been the most popular model in the Phoenix line-up, thanks to its versatile four-berth layout and manageable towing weight.
For the Black Edition, Bailey hasn’t altered the fundamentals that made the 640 a best-seller, but it has introduced a series of updates that give the caravan a sharper, more contemporary edge. Externally, this means new decals, darker trim details and alloy wheels that set it apart from the standard Phoenix.
Inside, subtle changes to the furniture finish, upholstery, and work surfaces bring the décor closer in line with Bailey’s higher-spec models, without moving the Phoenix away from its role as a practical, mid-range tourer.

Exterior & Construction: Unicorn Shape, Fresh Details
Bailey’s Alu-Tech construction system remains the backbone of the Phoenix, with an interlocking aluminium framework, a GRP outer skin and enhanced insulation that makes the caravan suitable for year-round use.
The big change for 2026 is the new front end, with a front window seemingly borrowed from Bailey’s Unicorn and Alicanto models. This gives it a look that’s in keeping with the more expensive models in Bailey’s portfolio.
On the Black Edition, the bodywork is finished in Polar White and Dove Grey with Black Edition graphics, while the trim and alloy wheels have been updated to darker finishes. At 2.21m (7ft 3in) wide and with a shipping length of 7.34m (24ft 1in), it’s a reasonably slim caravan for its class, helping both stability on the road and access to smaller campsites. I have had Phoenix models for years, and I find this to be a huge plus when booking a CL site, etc.

Living Space: Light and Practical
The front lounge is one of the caravan’s strongest assets. Large parallel seats, finished in the updated Echo upholstery(with Aquaclean ‘Lima’ available as an option), provide comfortable seating by day and convert into either two singles or a large double at night.
Overhead lockers are finished in Light Oak and Stone Grey, with matte-black detailing to tie in with the exterior styling. The Black Edition also replaces curtains with upholstered side panels, which gives the lounge a cleaner, less fussy appearance.
The large infinity front window brings in ample light, complemented by roof lights to keep the interior bright even on dull days.

Caravan Kitchen: Compact but Well-Equipped
Centrally positioned, the kitchen balances space and functionality. Work surfaces are finished in a new White Sandstone laminate with a drop-down extension to increase preparation space.
Equipment includes a Thetford dual-fuel hob (three gas burners and one electric hotplate), a combined oven and grill, and a flatbed microwave. A 92-litre Dometic fridge with a removable freezer compartment sits below the counter.
The sink and mixer tap follow the darker trim theme, with a stainless-steel bowl and matte-black fittings. For a mid-range tourer, the specification is competitive.

Bedroom: The Island Bed Advantage
The rear of the 640 is home to its most distinctive feature: a retractable longitudinal island bed. Measuring 1.9m by 1.355m, it offers a proper walk-around double when extended, yet can be pushed back during the day to free up floor space.
Each side benefits from a wardrobe and bedside unit, while the under-bed area provides functional additional storage. The upholstered headboard, updated in line with the Black Edition trim, contributes to the residential feel.

Washroom: Central and Well Thought-Out
The washroom sits midships, effectively dividing the bedroom and lounge for added privacy. The design features a lined shower cubicle with a bi-fold door, a Belfast-style basin with matte-black tap, and a Thetford electric-flush toilet.
Vanity units and shelving provide storage, and lighting includes a backlit mirror to lift the finish. A sliding door arrangement helps maximise space and makes the washroom easier to use without obstructing the corridor.
We used to have a Phoenix 760 with a central washroom, and it worked very well indeed, doubly so as it acted as a ‘snoring barrier’ between me and the kids!

Heating, Lighting & Power: All-Season Touring
Heating and hot water are managed by the Truma Combi 4 system, offering both gas and electric operation. The caravan is certified to the Grade III insulation standard, meaning it can be used throughout the year with confidence. I have slept in a Bailey Phoenix that was inside a cold chamber at -15C, so winter trips won’t be a problem.
Electrical provision is comprehensive for this sector, with multiple 230V sockets, USB points, a wireless charging pad, and LED lighting throughout. Entertainment comes via a SONOS portable speaker with Alexa.
Towing & Stability
Underneath, the 640 sits on an AL-KO chassis with an AKS stabiliser hitch fitted as standard. A receiver for an AL-KO Secure wheel lock is included, and buyers can add ATC trailer control as an option.
With an MTPLM of 1,467kg and an MRO of 1,312 kg, the payload allowance is 155kg, which is reasonable for its class. The weight makes it towable by many mid-sized family cars and SUVs, keeping the model accessible to a broad audience.

Verdict: The Phoenix GT75 Refined
The Black Edition version of the Phoenix 640 doesn’t change the fundamentals of what has made this model so popular, but the tweaks to its design and interior give it a more up-to-date, premium feel.
The island bed remains a standout feature, and coupled with a front lounge that can sleep two, it makes this an ever-popular 4-berth caravan. The lounge is bright and versatile, and the kitchen and washroom are sensibly specified.
Add in manageable towing weights and solid all-season credentials, and it’s easy to see why this model continues to top the sales charts in Bailey’s mid-range line-up.
