Labradors top the travel list as the most popular pet companions in new Caravan and Motorhome Club survey
According to a recent survey from the Caravan and Motorhome Club, 86% of dog owners choose to take their pets on holiday.

New research by The Caravan and Motorhome Club has revealed that the majority of dog owners in the UK—86%—are taking their pets on holiday, considering them an essential part of the family travel experience. Whether it’s a caravan, campervan, motorhome, or roof tent, more pet owners are making sure their dogs are part of the journey.
Labradors are the top choice for travelling pets, preferred by 22% of respondents. Golden Retrievers follow at 18%, with Jack Russells, Cocker Spaniels, and mixed breed rescue dogs each accounting for 14%. The findings reflect the growing popularity of pet-inclusive holidays where dogs are embraced as travel companions, not just left behind.
The survey also uncovered a few unexpected holidaymakers. Among the more unusual pets taken on the road were rabbits, cats, snakes, fish, and even bearded dragons.

To meet the rising demand for pet-friendly travel, The Caravan and Motorhome Club offers over 200 main sites and 2,200 smaller Certificated Locations across the UK. Many of these provide dog walks, wash areas, and designated pitches for dog owners. Dogs stay for free at all Club campsites, making it easier for members to include them in their trips.
Emotional support topped the list of reasons for bringing dogs along (31%), followed closely by convenience (30%) and the cost-saving benefits of avoiding kennels (25%). Despite the benefits, owners reported several challenges such as finding dog-friendly places to stop (57%), keeping pets calm (49%), and managing limited space in vehicles (28%).
As for travel preferences, caravans are the vehicle of choice for 43% of dog owners, with campervans (19%), motorhomes (17%), and vehicles with roof tents (16%) also proving popular.
The survey also explored the kinds of activities dog owners enjoy with their pets while on holiday. Labradors are most associated with beach trips, with half of respondents saying this is their favourite activity. Golden Retrievers also enjoy water-based outings and are often spotted on lakeside or coastal walks. Jack Russells are best suited to trail hiking and adventure walks (55%), while Cocker Spaniels enjoy woodland walks and playing fetch. Mixed breed and rescue dogs show a high level of adaptability, enjoying a variety of activities from rural hikes to city explorations.
Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing and Membership Services at The Caravan and Motorhome Club, said:
“Our members’ dedication to travelling with their pets is truly inspiring. That’s why we created the Paws of Approval rating system, to celebrate and support the most dog-friendly campsites in our network. It’s not just about dogs, either—rabbits, reptiles, and cats are all part of the travel community too. We’re proud to help people make the most of their holidays with every member of the family.”
The Club’s Paws of Approval scheme helps dog owners find the best campsites, based on votes from members and their pets. The top-rated campsites are recognised for going the extra mile with their dog-friendly facilities.
Alongside this, the Club fosters a community of pet-friendly travellers who regularly share their experiences and tips. Members also enjoy discounts on pet-related products and services, further enhancing the value of Club membership.
As one respondent put it: “Travelling with my dog is a must. The Caravan and Motorhome Club makes it so much easier with their dog-friendly facilities and supportive community.”
Whether heading for the coast or countryside, The Caravan and Motorhome Club continues to support memorable and inclusive travel for pet lovers across the UK.
