Looking for a Last-Minute Campsite?

When we first bought a caravan, most of our caravan holidays were spur-of-the-moment decisions. A quick glance at the weather forecast, a dash to pick up the kids, and we’d be pitched up by dusk.

Caravan, campervan, and motorhome travel has surged in popularity, which means finding a last-minute campsite can sometimes be tricky, especially during peak times like the summer holidays. But thanks to a host of new digital tools, securing a pitch with short notice is far easier than it used to be.

These tools haven’t just made planning easier—they’ve changed how we travel. Instead of limiting ourselves to a specific site or sticking close to one area, we now travel with a general direction in mind and choose where to stay based on what’s available. It’s liberating and often leads to places we wouldn’t have considered. On one such occasion, when our first-choice site was full, we discovered a quiet, five-pitch CL nestled next to miles of mountain biking trails.

So far, we’ve never missed a break using the resources below. It’s not a complete list—just tools we’ve used. We’d love to hear if you’ve got your own go-to last-minute booking tricks.

Late Availability Search Tools: Find last-minute deals

Both of the UK’s major clubs offer easy-to-use tools for finding last-minute campsites in the UK, from Cornwall to Scotland, Norfolk to Essex. Want to visit the Lake District? No problem.

Caravan and Motorhome Club:

  • Choose your travel date and region.
  • Results appear by week, up to two months in advance.
  • You can filter by site, county, and pitch type (e.g. serviced, grass, non-electric, awning options, etc.).
  • During busy periods, widen your search criteria first, then filter down once you see what’s available.

Camping and Caravanning Club:

  • Search by location or site.
  • Enter check-in/check-out dates.
  • Specify your setup—caravan, motorhome, campervan, trailer tent, etc.—and input dimensions.

Small Sites: CLs, CSs & the CL Booking Platform

Certified Locations (CLs) and Certified Sites (CSs) are small, member-only campsites with a maximum of five units. They are ideal for a quieter UK holiday and can be a fantastic, last-minute find.

Until recently, booking required multiple phone calls and voicemails. Now, thanks to the CL Booking website and app, it’s much easier to find availability and book. At the time of writing, it lists over 230 Caravan and Motorhome Club CLs, searchable by region and date. Once you find availability, confirmation usually comes quickly via email.

Note: CL Booking only lists sites from the Caravan and Motorhome Club network.

Breaks at Temporary Sites & Pop-Ups

During peak months, temporary campsites often appear across the UK to handle increased demand.

Rallies: More Than Just Social Events

Rallies aren’t just for seasoned members or large events like ClubFest or the NFOL. There are rallies for everyone—from brand-specific meetups (e.g. Bailey Owners) to hobbyist gatherings or regional adventures.

They’re welcoming, low-pressure, and often cost less than traditional sites. Use them as a relaxed base to explore the area or join in with activities—it’s totally up to you. Some may be close to home, while others may be near your favourite campsite.

Independent Campsites & Holiday Parks

While club-affiliated sites are a great option,  thousands of independent campsites across the UK offer excellent facilities, stunning locations, and flexible booking, which are especially useful when planning a last-minute escape. These websites may offer more than caravan parks, as some include mobile homes and camping pods.

Thanks to campsite aggregator platforms, discovering these hidden gems has never been easier. Whether you’re looking for a glamping pod in the Lake District, a dog-friendly field near the beach, or just the nearest available pitch before sunset, these tools give you fast access to live availability and filters tailored to your needs.

Here are some of the best platforms for spontaneous bookings:

Pitchup.com

One of the UK’s leading campsite directories, Pitchup lists thousands of sites, from well-known holiday parks to tiny farm fields and everything in between.

  • Filters galore: Search by location, travel dates, pitch type (grass, hardstanding, electric/non-electric), on-site facilities (Wi-Fi, showers, dog-walking areas), and accommodation types, including glamping options like yurts and pods.
  • Real-time availability: Many listings update instantly, so you can book a same-day pitch with just a few taps.
  • Last-minute deals: Look for discounts on unsold pitches. Some sites offer lower rates for same-day or next-day bookings.

Great for: Families, couples, or solo travellers seeking flexible options with clear amenities and reviews.

Campsites.co.uk

Another easy-to-navigate platform, Campsites.co.uk, offers a similar range to Pitchup but with a stronger emphasis on inspirational browsing—ideal if you don’t have a set destination in mind.

  • Collections and themes: Browse by themes like “secluded sites,” “coastal camping,” “dog-friendly breaks,” or “last-minute escapes.”
  • Interactive map: Handy if you’re mid-journey and want to scout your options along your route visually.
  • User reviews and photos: See what other campers thought before you commit.

Great for: Discovering new locations or planning a trip based on vibe rather than a specific spot.

Searchforsites

Favoured by campervan and motorhome users, Searchforsites is a powerful tool for locating stopovers, basic sites, and wild-style parking.

  • Campsites, aires, and stopovers: Includes a broad mix of formal campsites, pub stopovers, and more rustic locations, both in the UK and across Europe.
  • Community-powered reviews: Real-life feedback, photos, and GPS coordinates submitted by fellow travellers.

Great for: Off-grid explorers, motorhomers, or those chasing adventure without a fixed itinerary.

Campercontact

A must-have for motorhome users, Campercontact lists over 35,000 motorhome parking spots, aires, and campsites across Europe, with a growing UK base.

  • Suitable for motorhomes: It focuses on places where motorhomes can legally park and stay overnight.
  • Facility filters: Narrow results based on services like water fill-up, waste disposal, or 230v hook-ups.
  • Community updates: Stay current with information on accessibility, noise levels, and recent changes from road users.

Great for: Touring motorhomers who need reliable, legal overnight options at short notice.

Park4Night

Ideal for free-spirited van lifers, Park4Night offers listings ranging from full campsites to informal overnight parking spots in scenic areas.

  • User-submitted stops: Discover locations you won’t find on traditional campsite booking sites—like lay-bys with mountain views or Forestry Commission car parks.
  • Community input: Each location has photos, user reviews, and practical tips (e.g., surface type, slope, busy times).
  • App-first experience: Very mobile-friendly, perfect for checking options while on the move.

Great for: Campervan users who value flexibility, solitude, or travel on a tight budget.

Why Use Aggregator Tools to Find a Holiday or Last-Minute Camping Spot

  • Fast decision-making: Filter, book, and get directions in minutes—no need for phone calls or waiting on email confirmations.
  • Broad selection: You’ll find everything from luxury parks with swimming pools to no-frills farm fields.
  • Extra availability: During busy periods when club sites are full, independent sites often have more space or accept more flexible arrival times.

Brit Stops: Free Overnight Stays with Local Charm (Motorhomes & Campervans Only)

If you’re travelling by motorhome or campervan and looking for a flexible, budget-friendly way to explore the UK, Brit Stops is well worth considering. This members-only scheme connects you with hundreds of welcoming hosts nationwide who offer free overnight stopovers in exchange for your custom and good manners.

You’ll find stopovers at:

  • Country pubs
  • Farm shops
  • Breweries and vineyards
  • Craft centres
  • Heritage attractions
  • And other small businesses

These stops offer a wonderful alternative to traditional campsites. They are often located in picturesque rural spots or quaint villages, and they allow you to support local businesses as you travel.

Important Notes:

  • Only motorhomes and campervans are permitted. Due to space and access restrictions, towed caravans are not yet allowed.
  • Your vehicle must be fully self-contained—this means having your own onboard toilet, water, and waste facilities, as Brit Stops locations don’t usually provide access to hook-ups, showers, or emptying points.
  • Overnight stays are free, but the idea is to buy something in return—a pint at the pub, a local cheese from the farm shop, or a meal in a vineyard café. It’s a fair exchange that supports local trade.

How to Use Brit Stops:

  • You’ll need to purchase the annual Brit Stops guidebook, which now includes access to a companion app. The book includes all locations, contact details, icons denoting facilities (e.g. pet-friendly, hardstanding, access to food/drink), and any special notes from hosts.
  • Arrive during the host’s opening hours, and always introduce yourself on arrival. Park as directed, and don’t overstay your welcome—the stop is for one night only unless otherwise arranged.

Why We Recommend It:

Brit Stops is ideal for last-minute trips, as it removes the need to find a traditional pitch and introduces a more relaxed, community-based style of touring. It’s particularly useful if you’re road-tripping with no fixed destination, or want to enjoy a pub meal without needing a taxi back to a site.

Plus, the diversity of stops means you’re likely to discover off-the-beaten-path locations and meet some genuinely interesting people along the way.

No Hook-Up? No Problem.

When bookings are tight, try searching for non-electric pitches. For instance, I couldn’t find a standard pitch at Trewethett Farm, famous for its cliff-top views. But when I looked for non-electric options, I landed a brilliant spot with a significant saving.

Modern caravans and motorhomes are built to operate without 230v mains—using a mix of gas and 12v power for lights, heating, and appliances. Ensure your leisure battery is charged and your gas bottle is full before leaving.

Whether you’re chasing sunshine or simply in the mood for a change of scenery, last-minute caravan and motorhome holidays are still very much within reach—and often the most memorable.
